Sustainability

The K-CDC is committed to reducing our impact on the environment through our daily operations, education, and even fund-raisers. Modeling conservation habits in the classroom and articulating why we do it will help spread understanding of its benefits and importance.

Operations

With the help of a grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, we have begun a recycling and composting project to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfills. The children help us sort our recycling into bins and are learning which of their food scraps are most compostable and why. Also, whenever possible (within the health department’s sanitation guidelines), we choose and use environmentally safe cleaning and laundry products.

Education

Environmental awareness is emphasized in the classroom. Group learning times periodically include reading books and discussing topics on being good stewards of our environment. The children actively recycle and compost in the classroom, and “field trips” include visits to our outdoor compost bin to help turn the compost and investigate the way it changes over time.

Children reuse materials in a variety of ways. For example, they paint on the backs of shiny poster paper the local businesses donate to us instead of discarding, or they create a store or restaurant in their dramatic play center with empty food boxes, or they use plastic juice containers for pouring and scooping the stuff-of-the-day in the sensory table, or they sort various plastic lids in a mathematics exploration.

At the K-CDC, children spend a considerable amount of time outdoors at all times of year and they frequently bring nature indoors (e.g. snow in the sensory table). These experiences help them make connections with our natural world and instill in them an appreciation for nature.

To communicate our conservation ethic, our Director has created quarterly Eco-Note newsletters:

Fund-raising

Additionally, some of our fund-raising events take on an environmental twist. We have found our niche in an annual garage sale, in which members donate gently used items for us to sell.
